The Chief Battery Management System (BMS) Engineer will serve as the technical authority for the development and integration of advanced Battery Management Systems for Fluence’s Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This role will lead the design, validation, and implementation of BMS technologies, ensuring safety, performance, reliability, and compliance with global standards. The Chief BMS Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive innovation in battery intelligence, thermal and electrical management, and software systems, enabling Fluence to deliver industry-leading energy storage solutions.
What you will do at Fluence:
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership: Act as the technical authority and decision-maker for all aspects of BMS design and integration within Fluence’s battery modules, racks, and enclosures.
BMS Architecture Development: Design and optimize BMS architecture, including hardware, firmware, and software, to enhance safety, performance, and operational efficiency.
Battery Intelligence: Implement advanced algorithms for state-of-charge (SOC), state-of-health (SOH), and thermal management to improve battery performance and lifespan.
Standards and Compliance: Ensure all BMS designs comply with global safety and performance standards (e.g., UL, IEC, ISO, and UN regulations).
System Integration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate BMS into the broader BESS system, including power conversion, thermal management, and controls.
Testing and Validation: Lead the development and execution of comprehensive BMS testing and validation protocols, including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and field validation.
Supplier Management: Work closely with OEM battery cell providers to integrate their systems with Fluence’s BMS and ensure compatibility and reliability.
Innovation and R&D: Stay at the forefront of emerging BMS technologies and trends, driving continuous improvement and innovation in Fluence’s offerings.
Collaboration: Provide mentorship to engineering teams and collaborate closely with Chief Engineers (Battery, Mechanical, Thermal, Electrical, etc) to ensure seamless product development.,
What you will bring to Fluence:
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields. Ph.D. preferred.
Experience: 10+ years of experience in BMS design and development, with a focus on battery energy storage systems or electric vehicles.
Technical Expertise:
Deep knowledge of battery technologies, including lithium-ion chemistries.
Expertise in BMS hardware design, software development, and algorithm optimization.
Experience with embedded systems, microcontrollers, and real-time operating systems (RTOS).
Strong understanding of thermal management, power electronics, and system controls.
Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with global standards, including UL 1973, IEC 62619, ISO 26262, and UN38.3.
Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and mentor engineers.
Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts to diverse audiences.
