About the Team

OpenAI’s Child Safety team helps to ensure that OpenAI’s technologies are not misused or abused in ways harmful to underage populations. Through close partnerships with our Legal, Platform Policy, and Investigations colleagues, this team manages processes, incidents, and reviews to protect our products and users. The team also handles key external engagements and relationships.

About the Role

You will lead the development and enhancement of AI-driven tools designed to detect and mitigate abuse, ensuring scalability, efficiency, and effectiveness. Responsibilities include managing the lifecycle of child safety projects, prioritizing tasks, and maintaining documentation for transparency and accountability. This work involves improving user-friendly reporting systems, coordinating with Legal and cross-functional teams, and continuously seeking improvements in Child Safety measures. Additionally, you’ll help ensure all initiatives adhere to ethical guidelines and respect user privacy, particularly for children.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Child Safety experience, including implementing or managing child safety technology and familiarity with regulations and best practices in child protection.

  • A strong technical background, including engineering experience, to facilitate collaboration with engineering teams to design and deploy AI-driven tools for detecting and mitigating abuse. Knowledge of system scalability and efficiency is critical.

  • Demonstrated capability to manage the full lifecycle of projects, from initiation to completion, including goal setting, timeline management, task prioritization, and maintaining clear documentation and accountability.

  • Strong analytical skills are necessary to assess and continuously improve the effectiveness of child safety measures, including the ability to evaluate current programs and initiate innovations.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required to communicate with internal stakeholders and external partners effectively.

About the Interview Process

The interview process for this role may include a coding/engineering assessment, technical discussions and virtual or in-person meetings with our team.
