Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.

Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the high performance standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. We're looking for talented teammates who'll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.

In this hybrid role, you will report to a Systems Engineering Manager.

You will:

  • Use your knowledge of complex AV/ADAS hardware/software systems, systems engineering best practices, and program management skills to contribute to a cutting edge collision avoidance test program
  • Own the full stack from envisioning new frameworks, creating new process/procedures/tools, defining coverage requirements, supporting test planning and execution, data analysis, and clearly communicating results
  • Perform detailed analysis of test data to guide decision making in both your own scope of work and across other parts of the company
  • Design and implement automation to assist in test generation, interpretation and analysis
  • Work with various partner teams to deeply understand the collision avoidance problem space and help prioritize the right long-term solutions.

You have:

  • Degree in a technical or quantitative field or equivalent practical experience
  • 5+ years relevant work experience in robotics, aerospace automotive systems engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Strong team player who communicates clearly
  • Experience with detailed data analysis
  • Coding knowledge in at least one of the following: SQL, Python, C, C++, or other querying or data management languages

We prefer:

  • Experience at an industry-leading AV / ADAS or OEM program
  • History of making significant contributions to the overall conceptual development of complex AV/ADAS products
  • Experience shipping production-ready systems
  • Experience in strategy, change management, and rolling-out large scale initiatives
  • Experience with cutting-edge simulation environments
  • A passion for improving road safety through the thoughtful application of robotics systems and automation
