At OpenAI, our Compliance team is dedicated to fostering a culture of integrity and adherence to regulatory and legal requirements. We collaborate closely with legal, security, and operational teams to ensure that our compliance programs support the organization's mission while mitigating risks in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

 

About the Role

The Compliance Counsel will play a key role in ensuring OpenAI's adherence to applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies. This position will focus on developing, implementing, and maintaining compliance programs to support the organization’s objectives while mitigating risks. The ideal candidate will possess strong regulatory knowledge, analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate across departments. This role reports to our Chief Compliance Officer. 

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain compliance policies and procedures in accordance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Monitor and assess compliance risks across various business functions, providing guidance and recommendations.

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with regulations.

  • Conduct internal assessments to identify areas for improvement and drive corrective actions.

  • Provide training and support to employees on compliance-related matters to foster a culture of integrity and accountability.

  • Stay current with evolving compliance regulations and best practices. 

  • Assist with responding to regulatory inquiries, audits, and investigations.

  • Work closely with legal, security, and operations teams to align compliance initiatives with business objectives.

  • Prepare reports and presentations for senior management and regulatory bodies as needed.

 

You might thrive in this role if you have:

  • A Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited institution.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in compliance, legal, or related regulatory roles.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to effectively collaborate across teams.

  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience in the technology or AI sector is a plus.
