POSTED Mar 16
Employment Counsel (Senior Counsel or Associate General Counsel)
at Anthropic ⋅ San Francisco
Anthropic’s mission to develop advanced AI for the long-term benefit of humanity has attracted an extraordinary collection of people. Achieving our audacious mission will depend on rapidly scaling our talented team, and performance management systems that enable extraordinary people to do their best work. We are seeking a seasoned Employment Counsel who is excited by this challenge to join Anthropic as our first in-house employment counsel, and be a key strategic partner to our People team. As an early leader in our legal team, you'll help build a world-class function while tackling a wide range of challenges in a rapidly scaling startup.
About Anthropic
Anthropic is an AI safety and research company that’s working to build reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our customers and for society as a whole. Our interdisciplinary team has experience across ML, physics, policy, business and product.
Responsibilities:
- Counsel across a broad range of employment laws and workplace issues at a rapidly growing rocket ship expanding internationally.
- Be a strategic partner to the People team in building and refining systems to attract, retain, and motivate high performers to achieve their best work.
- Stay up to date on relevant employment laws, regulations, industry trends, and disseminate to key stakeholders these developments and their implications to Anthropic’s mission and business.
- Develop internal processes, policies, and tools to support employee law matters efficiently and at scale.
- As a relatively small legal team supporting big things, each attorney practices across multiple areas. We’d love to hear where else you’d be interested to pitch in, whether as a function of your experience or interests.
You may be a good fit if you:
- Think of your role as a People leader with legal training: your motivation and focus is enabling high performers to do their best work.
- Pair wisdom born of experience in seeing many employment matters play out in globally-expanding growth-stage companies with creativity and an openness to novel solutions.
- Have excellent business judgment and are attuned to what matters most in any situation, and can contextualize and communicate legal risk in relation to business objectives.
- Strive to deeply understand the interests and motivations of all parties to a negotiation and craft solutions that get parties to “yes.”
- Fight chaos with calm, communicating legal issues in a clear and concise manner to technical and business partners.
Strong candidates may also have:
- JD and active bar membership (California preferred).
- 8+ years of legal experience, with in-house experience strongly preferred (for appointment at Sr. Counsel level; appointment at the AGC level will be considered for highly experienced candidates).
- Diverse experience across areas of employment law and modes of practice, such as strategic counseling, policy and systems development, litigation, internal and regulatory investigations, and EOR/PEOs.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, analytical, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- A self-starter mentality, able to multi-task and juggle multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Authentic integrity and a deep understanding of the importance of ethics in business.
Annual Salary (USD)
- The expected salary range for this position is $275k - $375k USD.
Logistics
Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 75% of the time.
Deadline to apply: None. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
US visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate; operations roles are especially difficult to support. But if we make you an offer, we will make every effort to get you into the United States, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.

How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills. We do not have boundaries between engineering and research, and we expect all of our technical staff to contribute to both as needed.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
