The Opportunity
As the Engineering Manager, you will lead a talented and diverse team of backend engineers to design, develop, and maintain scalable, high-performance data solutions. You will be responsible for managing the end-to-end lifecycle of the engineering charter and work cross-functionally with product, business, and analytics teams to support data-driven decision-making and improve our engineering excellence in the ecosystem. In this role you will solve the problem of scale, engineering excellence, and champion the engineering excellence across the company.
What you’ll do day to day as an Engineering Manager
Key Responsibilities:
- Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals and timelines.
- Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.
- Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role and aligned to the broader organization's goals.
- Meet regularly with individuals to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching.
- Develop the mid-term technical vision and roadmap within the scope of your (often multiple) team(s).
- Evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated future requirements and infrastructure needs.
- Design, guide and vet systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and write product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems.
- Educate yourself and the team about the practices in building and operating an enterprise grade software.
- Actively participate in building the technical brand for Observe.AI and raise the bar for hiring.
What you’ll bring to the role
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field; advanced degree is a plus.
- 9+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 2 years in a leadership or managerial role.
- Experience of leading the backend engineering in an organisation and build and lead engineering teams, including hiring, mentoring, and developing talent.
- Experience working in a cross-functional environment, collaborating with product, engineering, and business teams to deliver high-impact solutions.
- Ability to design modules and lead initiatives independently with limited guidance.
- Build a lot of depth on a few business problems and associated tech solutions.
- Good understanding of common design patterns and principles.
- Passion for product quality and attention to detail.
- Ability to handle some ambiguity and chaos of a very fast paced environment.
- Up-to-date knowledge of evolving technologies and the ability to guide the team toward evaluating and adopting cutting-edge technologies.
