About the Role

OpenAI is looking for a Global Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Senior Program Manager to ensure the well-being and safety of our growing global workforce, maintain regulatory compliance, drive health and safety initiatives, and manage risks across its expanding operations. This role is crucial for supporting safe and consistent practices worldwide, preparing for emergencies, and reinforcing OpenAI's commitment to responsible business practices as it continues to scale.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. OpenAI uses a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offers relocation assistance to new employees. However, members of the Workplace team are encouraged to initially come in 5 days a week in support of our employees throughout the week. 

Some international travel may be required but we expect the local Workplace team to support and execute EHS programs at our distributed sites, given direction from the EHS program manager.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, implement, and manage a global EHS program that ensures compliance, reduces risks, and promotes sustainability across all operations.

  • Ensure adherence to local, state, and international EHS regulations, standards, and best practices in all company locations.

  • Help conduct comprehensive risk assessments, develop mitigation strategies, and lead incident investigations to prevent recurrence.

  • Foster a strong safety culture through engaging training programs, leadership coaching, and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Lead initiatives to reduce the company's environmental footprint, including waste reduction, energy efficiency, and sustainable resource management.

  • Develop and implement emergency response and business continuity plans, ensuring readiness across all global sites.

  • Utilize data analytics to monitor EHS performance, identify trends, and drive continuous improvement.

  • Ensure suppliers and contractors adhere to the company's EHS standards, minimizing risks associated with third-party operations.

 You might thrive in this role if you have: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in EHS program management with a fast growing technology company

  • Minimum of 3 years leading the EHS function at global or multi-site company

  • Deep knowledge of global EHS regulations and best practices, with a track record of successful program development and implementation.

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage complex projects in fast-paced, high-growth environments.

  • Certification in EHS (e.g., CSP, CIH, NEBOSH, ISO) is highly desirable.

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.

  • Experience with EHS software systems and data-driven decision-making.

  • Willingness to travel internationally as needed.
