About the Role
The Autonomy Operations team is looking for a Mission Operations Manager to drive and lead the success of the Mission Operations Coordinators. In this role, you will manage the Mission Operations Coordinators (MOC) directly and assume an elevated peer leadership position directly overseeing Mission Operations initiatives. You will have ownership of daily mileage collection and workflows of Mission Operations are executed to a high standard, information is effectively disseminated amongst the MOC team, and that Mission Operations effectively executes upon the goals and priorities set forth by the City Lead and other cross-functional teams. As Mission Operations Shift Manager you will also be the point of contact for pressing mission operations related issues and will step in to make decisions with the MOC team when your City Lead cannot be not present.
In addition to your management responsibilities, you will support day-to-day Mission Operations duties as needed. Chief among these is the effective coordination of operator and fleet resources by regularly executing our weekly plan and by using our goals and priorities to properly reallocate resources when issues arise. In addition, you will respond to and appropriately escalate emergency and troubleshooting situations with composure and follow these issues through to resolution. Finally, you will be asked to help identify opportunities for growth in our team’s workflows and address them analytically through Continuous Improvement projects. In this way, you are not only dispatching - you are shaping the future of the Mission Operations team.
About the Work
- People Management:
- Hiring & Onboarding: You will be responsible for running the interview process and successfully executing the onboarding for new hires in line with the plan. You will work closely with the L&D team to develop the interview & onboarding process and the grading rubric.
- People Development: You will be expected to lead and manage a team of ~ 3-5 Mission Operations Coordinators (MOC). Responsibilities will include providing feedback & guidance, ensuring their training & competency is up to date and providing coaching/ mentoring.
- Performance Management: You will be responsible for the performance reviews of the MOCs you manage in line with the performance evaluation metrics. As needed you will work with stakeholders to update these metrics and/or determine ways to better capture these metrics and feedback
- Execution Management:
- You will be responsible for activities that include capturing MOC attendance and OOO tracking, performance tracking, project management, etc
- You will work closely with the City Lead to ensure all MOCs are executing to their daily tasks promptly and ensuring proper communication amongst the team
- You will work closely with the planning team to understand the goals for the week and the allocation strategy
- You will actively review plan vs actual performance of scheduling and Job Manager of your team on a weekly basis to understand drivers for deviations and identify action items to resolve those
- You will work with Mission Operations Project Manager and MOCs to manage continuous improvement processes and projects to enhance efficiency and throughput (Deep ‘what’s working and not” feedback)
- You will constantly engage with your peers in other locations to share best practices and drive standardization
- Scheduling & Coordinating:
- Gain and maintain an overall understanding of Nuro’s fleet operations and team capacities across multiple geographies
- Coordinate a full shift (up to 10 hours a day) of fleet operations (testing, manual data collections, deliveries) across multiple geographies and document those activities; use independent judgment on a daily basis to course correct and re-optimize to maximize productivity
- Translate the weekly plan into an actionable schedule via daily operator assignments and ensure execution to plan; capture “Plan vs Actual” data and provide insights on deviations
- Ensure procedures are followed and checklists completed consistently
- Share feedback on operator performance with Shift Supervisors
- Update and publish daily shift reports
- Troubleshooting & Emergency Response:
- Act as an initial point of escalation in the troubleshooting of all hardware and software related issues; follow these issues through to resolution
- Act as an initial point of escalation for any emergency situations; handle situations with composure and follow incidents through to resolution
- Effectively communicate with operators in the field and respond as needed
- Project Management:
- Assist other Mission Operations Coordinator as needed in their contributions to the above; perform regular check-ins to make sure progress is being made and to gather feedback or concerns from Mission Operations Coordinators for Autonomy Operations leadership
- Proactively perform “deep-dive” analyses on various data points to identify areas of improvement that can be made from both a systems, process and people standpoint.
- Drive Mission Operations workflow optimization & automation efforts by working closely with the Product team and various other cross-functional teams
- Drive planning optimization by synthesizing data and documenting “Plan vs Actual” insights
- Continuous Improvement:
- Assist other Mission Operations Coordinators as needed in their contributions to the above; perform regular check-ins to make sure progress is being made on MOC owned sprint goals and initiatives.
- Analytically drive workflow and tooling improvements through Continuous Improvement projects that address opportunities for growth in our day-to-day operations
About You
- 3+ years of resource planning, allocation, optimization, reporting, etc., ideally in fleet management, autonomous driving, and/or robot operations/logistics or equivalent experience
- Including 12+ months of exceptional performance in a Mission Operations Coordinator / equivalent role
- Strong leadership qualities and a desire to help manage a team
- Ownership mentality with natural aptitude for proactive problem solving
- Extreme attention to detail
- Ability to synthesize, communicate, and act upon constantly evolving information
- Ability to implement a schedule from plan to execution
- Ability to collect, synthesize, and analyze data to drive operational insights for various teams to leverage; comfortable with Google Sheets, Data Studio, Looker, etc.
- Ability independently solve problems and resolve issues
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; a willingness to change course and assist wherever needed
- Technologically savvy; comfortable with computing terminologies
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to remain flexible while adapting to the changing needs of the business
- Ability to travel domestically as needed
- BA/BS degree or equivalent practical experience
Bonus Points
- 4+ years experience in resource planning, allocation, and optimization
- Including 1+ year in a Sr. Missions Operations Coordinator role and/or equivalent experience with program management or operations role with direct reports
- 2+ years of experience in the AV/delivery industry
At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected pay range is between $64,600 and $87,210/year for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
