About the team

The OpenAI UX Research team is a bridge between OpenAI's users and our products. Through our research, we illuminate the needs, desires, and experiences of our users, ensuring that their voices guide the design and development of our products & lead to the safe deployment of AGI.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Work across OpenAI Product Teams to design, execute, and report on both quantitative and qualitative research throughout various product development stages—from early foundational research to concept testing, prototyping, and usability testing.

  • Collaborate closely with product managers and designers to identify and prioritize opportunities where research can improve product decisions and enhance customer experiences.

  • Lead the design of high-quality, customized studies that address strategic and tactical research questions, drawing on extensive experience with mixed methods research.

  • Demonstrate strong stakeholder management, influence, and communication skills by presenting your research findings to OpenAI leadership and key stakeholders.

  • Own the end-to-end research process, including meeting with stakeholders, defining impactful research questions, scoping projects, selecting methodologies, recruiting participants, developing prototypes, conducting research, analyzing insights, and delivering actionable reports.

  • Adapt between rigorous and scrappy research methods as needed, ensuring data validity and reliability to support informed recommendations.

You might thrive in this role if you have:

  • 7+ years of experience working  in user experience research and/or market research.

  • Expertise in mixed methods, with strong qualitative research skills and the ability to conduct solid quantitative research with large sample sizes.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence decision-making at all levels.

  • Proven experience leading research projects that have made a lasting impact on product and design decisions.

  • Experience working with senior stakeholders.

  • A drive for excellence and the ability to consistently raise the bar.
