About the Team

Our team is dedicated to enhancing the quality and performance of ChatGPT by developing and refining the metrics that guide its evolution. We work closely with data scientists and researchers across the organization to create metrics that are not only technically sound but also aligned with user experience and product quality. Operating at the intersection of data science and AI research, we ensure that every iteration of ChatGPT is better, faster, and more useful to millions of users worldwide.

About the Role

We are seeking an engineer to design, implement, and maintain the key metrics that drive improvements in ChatGPT’s performance and user experience, as well as the libraries and infrastructure that power these metrics. In this role, you will collaborate closely with data scientists to understand user behavior and devise impactful metrics based on these insights. You will also work alongside researchers to guide product development with these metrics, ensuring they accelerate research and align with our quality goals.

The ideal candidate has a solid foundation in software development and data science, with experience in metrics for complex applied AI products. Familiarity with large suites of metrics or human data pipelines is a plus. You should be adept at writing high-quality code, developing tools for model evaluation, and iteratively improving our metrics based on real-world feedback. Strong communication skills are essential to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Write maintainable, efficient, and well-tested code as part of our evaluation libraries.

  • Develop metrics that accurately reflect product quality and align with user satisfaction.

  • Work with many teams across the company to guide data-driven product development.

  • Work with our human data team to collect high quality and statistically significant evaluation datasets.

  • Sample projects include:

    • Prototyping new ways of evaluating our models on a new key domain.

    • Understanding the variance of a metric and building new datasets to reduce the variance.

    • Designing and executing experiments to validate that our metrics are accurately measuring perceived user quality.

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Are a collaborative team player – willing to do whatever it takes in a start-up environment

  • Have experience working in complex technical environments

  • Are passionate about bringing magical AI experiences to millions of users

  • Enjoy diving into the subtle details of datasets and evaluations

  • Are very proficient in Python

  • Have experience with dataset creation and human data collection at scale
