Postdoctoral Researcher, AI for Chemistry (PhD)

Facebook is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join Meta's Fundamental AI Research lab, a research organization focused on making fundamental progress in AI. Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) conducts cutting-edge research to deepen our understanding of existing AI methods and advance the state-of-the-art.
For this position, the applicant will engage with the supervisor and other researchers in Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) and Reality Labs Research (RLR) to work on using ML approaches to accelerate material discovery for next generation display technology or renewable energy applications.
You will develop and implement the research agenda, publish world-class research works, and make external impact. You will apply high standards to the research and develop an ability to identify highly impactful projects in a complex and unexplored domain. You will be able to gain valuable experience in a top-tier research institute, publish academic papers on a regular basis, and build your reputation across the world. Postdoc research areas may include machine learning, graph learning, Density Functional Theory, computational chemistry, optics, energy applications, or other similar fields.
Postdoctoral Researcher positions are one year fixed-term positions, extensions are on a case by case basis.
- Perform research to advance the science and technology of materials science for renewable energy applications and AR/VR displays.
- Collaborate with your supervisor and other researchers to discuss, develop and implement research agenda.
- Write and debug high-quality research code and research papers.
- Design and implement experiments to test research ideas on a variety of problems.
- High quality papers and present research at conferences.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree or completing a postdoctoral assignment in Computer Science, computational physics, computational chemistry, chemical engineering, or a similar field. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
- Experienced with implementing Quantum mechanical calculations using commercial softwares like VASP, Orca, Gaussian, FHI-aims and/or open-source software packages such as quantum espresso.
- Research background in Machine Learning, computational chemistry, or similar field.
- Experience solving analytical problems using analytic and quantitative approaches.
- Experience communicating research to audiences with different backgrounds.
- Experience coding in C/C++, Python, C#, or other similar languages.
- Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience having first-authored publications at peer-reviewed conferences or journals.
- Research and engineering experience demonstrated via grants, fellowships, patents, internships, work experience, and/or coding competitions.
- Experience solving complex problems and comparing alternative solutions, trade-offs, and diverse points of view to determine a path forward.
- Experience communicating research for public audiences of peers.
- Experience working and communicating cross functionally in a team environment.
- Experienced comparing computational and experimental measurements in materials science.

$117,000/year to $173,000/year + benefits
Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
