About the roleWe are seeking a talented and creative Privacy Engineer to join our Engineering team! As a Privacy Engineer at Character.AI, you’ll partner closely with our Legal and Product teams to develop thoughtful privacy frameworks for Character’s growing platform and build the technology that powers them. This is an exciting opportunity to jump into the cutting-edge field of AI privacy and help shape the next generation of privacy architecture.
Among the critical tasks you’ll take on:
Develop technical systems to operationalize privacy controls
Work with the Legal team to define data minimization, retention, and deletion protocols and build the technology to implement them
Build lightweight, user-friendly user interfaces to maximize user control over data, in partnership with the Product team
Partner with the Data team to implement data governance solutions
Establish a framework and build tools to anonymize both third-party and user data
Partner with the Security team on data protection issues
Requirements:
5+ years experience building and scaling backend systems to support a fast-growing consumer application
3+ years experience working on privacy or data governance-related Engineering projects
Experience writing highly performant services and strong knowledge of Python and/or Golang
Designing, implementing, and maintaining individual microservices that collectively form complex, scalable backend systems
Extensive experience with various database technologies, both relational (like PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (such as MongoDB, Cassandra, or DynamoDB). Proficiency in database design, sharding, replication, and tuning for high-traffic environments is highly desirable
Familiarity with major cloud service providers such as GCP, AWS, and/or Azure
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a knack for identifying and addressing bottlenecks, ensuring that backend systems perform optimally under varying loads
Proven ability to work collaboratively with product managers, designers, and frontend engineers to conceive, design, and implement new features that enhance user experience
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to cross-functional teams and stakeholders
B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
