The Opportunity

As the Senior Engineering Manager, Data, you will lead a talented and diverse team of backend and data engineers to design, develop, and maintain scalable, high-performance data solutions. You will be responsible for managing the end-to-end lifecycle of data platforms, ensuring data integrity, quality, and accessibility for business-critical applications. You will establish the data engineering charter and work cross-functionally with product, business, and analytics teams to support data-driven decision-making and improve our data ecosystem. In this role you will solve the problem of scale, data reliability, data observability and champion the data first mindset and engineering excellence across the company.

What you’ll do day to day as a Senior Engineering Manager , Data 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of data engineers, providing guidance, career growth opportunities, and fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Data Infrastructure: Oversee the design, development, and optimization of data pipelines, data lakes, and data warehousing solutions, ensuring scalability, efficiency, and high availability.
  • Architecture & Strategy: Collaborate with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to define the data architecture roadmap, aligning data infrastructure with business needs and technical requirements.
  • Technical Expertise: Drive best practices in data engineering, data governance, and performance tuning. Provide hands-on technical leadership, including code reviews, architecture discussions, and resolving complex technical challenges.
  • Data Quality & Security: Ensure that data is accurate, reliable, and secure by implementing rigorous data validation and governance frameworks. Promote a culture of data quality across the organization.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with data scientists, analysts, product managers, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements and translate them into actionable engineering solutions.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and data engineering best practices, and continuously evaluate and implement improvements in tools, processes, and methodologies.
  • Performance Metrics: Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to monitor the performance and health of data systems, ensuring they meet business objectives and service-level agreements (SLAs).

What you’ll bring to the role

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field; advanced degree is a plus.
  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial role.
  • Experience of creating the data charter in an organisation and build a data engineering practice 
  • Expertise in data engineering technologies such as SQL, ETL, data warehousing (e.g., Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery), cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), and big data tools (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, Kafka)
  • Knowledge of AI/ML infrastructure, best practices and tools is a plus.
  • Experience with machine learning and data science workflows.
  • Knowledge of data security and compliance frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  • Familiarity with data visualization and reporting tools (e.g., Tableau, Looker).
  • Experience with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines for data engineering.
  • Build and lead data engineering teams, including hiring, mentoring, and developing talent.
  • Experience working in a cross-functional environment, collaborating with product, engineering, and business teams to deliver high-impact solutions.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of evolving technologies and the ability to guide the team toward evaluating and adopting cutting-edge technologies.
