TEAM
Developing high-quality automated driving systems and advanced driver assistance systems (AD/ADAS) is both an urgent and complex challenge. Achieving this requires carefully designed software architecture, robust development processes, efficient testing methodologies, and a well-structured development environment.

Global Safety & Quality department plays a critical role in ensuring these efforts lead to high-quality outcomes. Our mission is to establish and reinforce quality assurance through rigorous auditing methods and data analysis while ensuring that development activities are executed effectively across teams. We believe that strong collaboration, clear communication, and deep expertise in processes, tools, and development management are key to driving success.

Within this department, the Functional Safety Engineering Management team leads global technical activities related to functional safety, including high-level requirements, architecture, and validation. Our goal is to align development plans, processes, and products with Toyota’s product life cycle, ensuring we deliver solutions that meet the highest standards of Quality, Cost, and Delivery (QCD). By harmonizing processes and tools across global teams, we help drive innovation while maintaining safety and reliability at every stage of development.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
This is a great opportunity to join our team which will support the engineering teams in developing safe SW products. We’re looking for an experienced functional safety engineer with a strong background in the automotive SW industry and a sound understanding of the fundamentals of functional safety and SW engineering; the person who knows what it means to do safety proactively and how to make it a key part of every product. We’re expecting you to understand the principles and rationales behind safety and SW engineering, related standards, and regulations, acknowledging that safety compliance is more than a ticking-the-boxes exercise.

Being a part of the Functional Safety Engineering team in a highly dynamic environment will give you an opportunity to bring in your vision of future-proof product safety, establish a safety culture, and participate in multidisciplinary research activities.

You will report to the Team Lead of Functional Safety Engineering Management within the Global Safety & Quality department, and this role is hybrid - you will work in the office 3+ days per week.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support engineering teams in getting initial software safety requirements (through the safety DIA/RFQ) or approving an assumed TSC
  • Create a safety plan with the engineering team
  • Support engineering teams in creating software safety requirements
  • Support engineering teams in performing safety analysis or SW tools evaluation
  • Assist architecture teams in defining safety mechanisms and improving the SW architecture for the products
  • Support the safety V&V activities performed by the QA teams
  • Support engineering teams in creating a safety manual / safety case
  • Create internal safety guidelines, templates, standards and safety-related policies
  • Perform internal safety training sessions with the engineering teams
  • Create tools and methods to support safety work
  • Maintain global communications with other safety teams and experts in Toyota Motor Corp, Toyota Motor North America, other Woven engineering teams, etc.
  • Perform safety confirmation reviews over the work products generated by external safety teams

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 7+ years of hands-on experience on ISO 26262 in the role of functional safety engineer for software product development
  • Strong knowledge and experience with ISO 26262-6
  • Experience in developing SW products, preferably for the automotive domain (e.g. ECU firmware, operating systems, middleware)
  • Solid understanding of SW safety analysis techniques and verification methods
  • Experience creating structured safety arguments or assessing safety arguments (confirmation reviews experience)
  • Outstanding communication skills to perform training sessions, guide engineering teams and participate in safety discussions with stakeholders
  • Professional level language proficiency in Japanese and English

    NICE TO HAVES

  • Experience working with JAMA and Catia Magic
  • Experience with Atlassian products
  • Functional safety or reliability certification with TUV, UL, ASQ or similar organization
  • Knowledge of C/C++ syntax, ability to read the code and understand basic algorithms and data structures
  • Experience with SW tools development and/or CI/CD roll-out
  • Understanding approaches for the out-of-context SW development (e.g. SDK)
