Senior Software Engineer - Observability

The Observability team at Zoox is dedicated to enabling visibility across distributed systems by building an intuitive, robust observability platform. Our mission is to empower engineering teams to make data-driven decisions and achieve operational excellence through best-in-class tools for metrics, traces, logs, events, and continuous profiling.

We're looking for an engineer with experience in high-load or data-intensive applications who understands the complexities of distributed systems and knows how to design solutions that improve system reliability and performance. In this role, you will bridge the gap between infrastructure and application teams, focusing on creating solutions that enhance system visibility and the developer experience.

In this role, you will:

  • Define, implement, and advocate for best practices in observability
  • Build and maintain a scalable observability platform that provides real-time insights into distributed systems and applications
  • Collaborate with software and infrastructure teams to understand their requirements and develop solutions that drive operational excellence and data-driven decision-making
  • Integrate and improve industry-standard tools like OpenTelemetry, Vector, Kafka, ClickHouse, and Grafana, while also developing custom tools when necessary
  • Iterate on our own AI-powered observability assistant to enhance the developer experience and streamline troubleshooting workflows
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation for observability tools and practices to ensure team-wide understanding and adoption

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, with 5+ years of industry experience
  • Strong experience with high-load or data-intensive applications and a deep understanding of distributed systems
  • Fluency in at least one of the following programming languages: Go, C++, Kotlin, Python
  • Customer-focused mindset with a passion for building intuitive and robust observability solutions

  • Experience with OpenTelemetry or other observability tools
  • A background in Site Reliability Engineering or DevOps
  • Open-source contributions
  • Compensation
    There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary range for this position is $165,000 to $264,000. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position.
