Who We Are
Nuro exists to better everyday life through robotics. Founded in 2016, Nuro has spent eight years developing autonomous driving (AD) technology and commercializing AD applications. The Nuro Driver™ is our world-class autonomous driving system that combines AD hardware with our generalized AI-first self-driving software. Built to learn and improve through data, the Nuro Driver™ is one of the few driverless autonomous technologies on public roads today.
Nuro has raised over $2B in capital from Fidelity, Bailie Gifford, T. Rowe Price, Google, and other leading investors. We’ve partnered with some of the world’s most respected brands including Uber, FedEx, Domino’s, Walmart, Kroger, and 7-Eleven.
About the Role
As a Senior/Staff Systems Engineer in Autonomy Validation, you will work closely with the autonomy software, operations, simulation, and data platform teams to validate the performance of various parts of the autonomy stack and support development of tools that assist with validation. You will be responsible for defining and the requirements and validation strategy for both offline and online mapping, leveraging both module-level and end-to-end evaluation. You will also be responsible for defining the requirements, specifications, algorithms, and user workflows for scenario coverage evaluation, supporting both in-house and external development teams. You will drive where needed software architecture and development, engineering roadmaps, validation, operations, and the safety case.
About the Work
- Lead Nuro’s scenario coverage program, including the specification and decomposition of the hierarchical scenario space, the definition of requirements and user stories for tooling, and the specification and development of algorithms relating to defining and evaluating scenario coverage, and engaging with both internal and external stakeholders and developers.
- Support inferences from both randomly-sampled and non-randomly-sampled test datasets by developing and applying statistical models and designing appropriate experiments.
- Support the safety case by identifying, documenting, and communicating Autonomy safety claims and decomposed system requirements related to the context map.
- Engage with the context map team to guide and audit scenario-based testing frameworks, apply analytical techniques for risk identification such as Hazards and Risk Analysis (HARA) and Systems Theoretical Process Analysis (STPA), and interpret probabilistic test results.
- Identify and design realistic scenarios to measure residual safety risks and drive test coverage, including synthetic third-party accident reconstructions.
About You
- Experience with scenario-based testing frameworks, traffic scenario labeling, and metrics (e.g. NHTSA, ISO 34502, ISO 34503).
- Strong foundation in algorithm development, data manipulation, and statistical analysis (Bayesian preferred) in Python (or equivalent).
- Nice to have: familiarity with set cover algorithms.
- Fundamental understanding of AV data, particularly sensor output.
- Working knowledge of kinematics and rigid transformations.
- Working knowledge of and ability to apply systems engineering concepts of requirements, verification and validation.
- Experience with ISO 21448 and familiarity with ISO 8800.
- Highly collaborative in nature, with strong abilities to think and communicate analytically and effectively, and the ability to build good working relationships.
- Self starter and fast learner - you should be passionate about picking up new skills and approaching unstructured problems from first principles, and be self-motivated to prioritize and manage workload and meet critical project deadlines.
- Ability to manage both internal and external stakeholders.
