About the role
The Director of Hardware Engineering will lead our hardware design team in Taiwan which includes EE and PD engineers. This director will manage EE, ME, and you will report to the VP of Hardware Engineering in the United States (US). The US and Taiwan EE and PD teams work in strong collaborations with the Supply Chain team, Product Management, quality engineers, laboratories, JDM design resources, and a growing supply base, most of which is located in Taiwan.
The design teams focus on the unique design work like architecture, key component selection and industrial design, while leveraging JDM partners for more industry standard design work. The team regularly runs cost and design feasibility studies encompassing chipset selection, thermals, antenna, industrial design, etc. We have a tremendous amount of telemetry and access to customers that help guide our design process. We crawl around equipment and industrial facilities working directly with our customers to ensure we lead the industry in our product design.
This role is based in our Taipei office, and it is a hybrid position required to office as needed. This position requires travel up to 25% of the time and proximity to an international airport. Relocation will not be provided,

In this role, you will:
- Ship successful products.
- Research: Stay abreast of the latest silicon possibilities from all the top semiconductor companies.
- Architect: Evaluate system feature trade-offs and create the system specifications for development with product management and cross-functional engineering teams.
- Lead the development process, from prototyping through field validation according to performance, cost and schedule goals.
- Mentor, coach, and uplevel the team around you. You will be a role model.
- Manage: Hire and develop a team of electrical and product design engineers.
- Partner with top JDM companies to design, validate, certify and manufacture quality products, certification labs and other external consultants.
- Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices.
Minimum requirements for the role:
- 3+ years of director level experience shipping high volume hardware programs with ODM and JDM partners overseas.
- 15+ Systems design expertise including chipset/SoC selection, power, antennas/RF, batteries, PCB design, etc.
- Proven record navigating tradeoffs between design, manufacturability, schedule, and cost.
- Worked on a wide variety of systems for different use cases including automotive, indoor and outdoor industrial areas leveraging low power, wireless (LTE, BLE, WiFi, GPS), embedded AI/ML, imaging, sensors, etc.
- Excellent communications and organizational skills to enable collaboration and team development.
- BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field.
