Research Engineer, Language Modeling - Neuromotor Interfaces

Reality Labs at Meta is seeking a Research Engineer with experience in language modeling research and production for embedded devices to advance our pioneering work in neuromotor interfaces, which has grown out of the acquisition of CTRL-labs. We’re building a practical neural interface for text entry drawing on the rich neuromotor signals that can be measured non-invasively with single motor neuron resolution. This technology will become one of the main pillars for interaction with the virtual and augmented world.
We are a multi-disciplinary team of researchers building text input methods using human neuromotor signals (i.e., electromyography or EMG). EMG signals are similar in many ways to other neural signals and audio signals and can be analyzed using many of the same approaches. For example, the task of transcribing characters typed on a keyboard from wrist-based EMG is closely analogous to that of automatic speech recognition. We’re looking for people who want to shape the future of this technology and explore this exciting new territory with us.
- Design methods, tools, and infrastructure to push forward the state of the art in language models suitable for deployment to edge devices.
- Develop applications of language models for autocorrect, autocomplete, auto-capitalization, and other predictive-text tasks.
- Integrate language modeling with other models and decoders, e.g., using beam search within a finite-state transducer framework.
- Collaborate with research and Human-Computer Interactions (HCI) teams to deploy language models that leverage fundamental knowledge into new technology and user experiences.
- Develop production-grade code for deployment in research prototypes and pre-production devices.
- Define research goals informed by practical engineering concerns.
- Contribute to experiments, including designing experimental details, writing reusable code, running evaluations, and organizing results.
- Autonomously set technical direction.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Research experience in machine learning, deep learning, and/or natural language processing.
- Experience developing machine learning models at scale from inception to business impact.
- Programming experience in Python and hands-on experience with frameworks such as PyTorch.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in industry working autonomously to design and build software systems and conduct research.
- Master’s degree in one of the following fields: machine learning, computer science, natural language processing, computational linguistics, or related fields.
- Experience with predictive text input algorithms and system design on edge devices.
- Experience bringing machine learning-based products from research to production.
- Experience with interdisciplinary and/or cross-cultural collaboration.
- Experience with real-time signal processing and/or human-computer interaction.
- Experience with large scale cluster computing for machine learning modeling, architectural patterns of large scale software applications.
- First author publications experience at peer-reviewed AI conferences (NeurIPS, ICLR, ACL, EMNLP, Interspeech, ICASSP, etc.).
